DC-2007 Call for Papers published, deadline for submissions 2 April 2007

, The Program Committee for DC-2007, to be held in Singapore from 27 through 31 August 2007, has issued the Call for Papers for the conference. Please note that the deadline for submission of papers is 2 April 2007.

, The Program Committee for DC-2007, to be held in Singapore from 27 through 31 August 2007, will be chaired by Abdus Sattar Chaudry of Nanyang Technological University and Stuart Sutton of the University of Washington.

DC-2007 to be held in Singapore in the week of 27-31 August 2007

, The DCMI Directorate is pleased to announce that DC-2007 will be held in Singapore in the week of 27-31 August 2007, hosted by the National Library Board in cooperation with the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information of Nanyang Technological University. An initial conference Web site has been installed with a number of relevant links. Publication of the Call for Papers is expected in December 2006.

DC-2006 in Manzanillo: a successful conference

, This year's conference, DC-2006, was held 3-6 October 2006 in Manzanillo, Colima, Mexico, and hosted by the University of Colima, with 250 participants from 24 countries. Key topics were model-based interoperability, controlled vocabularies, and practical deployment issues. Presentations are available for download from the conference program.

Satellite meetings at DC-2006

, Around the DC-2006 conference, a number of DCMI committees will have meetings. On 30 September and 1 October 2006, a meeting takes place of the DCMI Usage Board. The day before the conference, 2 October 2006, a meeting is scheduled of the DCMI Advisory Board, while the day after the conference, 7 October 2006, the DCMI Board of Trustees will meet. All meetings will take place in the conference hotel in Manzanillo, Colima, Mexico.

, The program for DC-2006 has been upgraded to include details of the paper sessions with paper titles and authors. Registration details are available at the registration page. A call for sponsors has also been published on the conference Web site.

DC-2006 Preliminary Program published

, The preliminary program for DC-2006, to be held in Manzanillo, Colima, Mexico on 3-7 October 2006, is now available from the conference Web site. The conference features two keynotes, one on 3 October by Abel Packer of BIREME in Brazil and one on 6 October by Michael Crandall of the Information School at the University of Washington. In three plenary and four parallel paper sessions, 21 long and 7 short papers will be presented, while an additional seven papers will be read in a special session for reports on Portuguese and Spanish language projects. Furthermore, in the workshop track 13 working group sessions and eight special sessions are on the program. One each of the four conference days, a set of tutorials will introduce basic as well as more advanced concepts related to the implementation of Dublin Core metadata in practice.

DC-2006 Call for Papers now closed

, The Call for Papers for DC-2006 is now closed. The Program Committee will review the papers received and communicate acceptance to the authors in June. DCMI Usage Board meets in Seattle

, The DCMI Usage Board met on 29 and 30 April 2006 at the Information School of University of Washington in Seattle. The agenda included follow-up to the public comment period on DCMI Type Vocabulary and the editorial alignment of term descriptions with the DCMI Abstract Model.

DC-2006 Program Chairs and Coordinators appointed

, In preparation for DC-2006, to be held 3-6 October 2006 in Manzanillo (Colima) in Mexico, Javier Solorio Lagunas of the University of Colima and Thomas Baker of DCMI have been appointed Program Chairs, while Lourdes Feria Basurto of the University of Colima and Makx Dekkers of DCMI have taken on responsibility as coordinators of the event. The Call for Papers is scheduled for publication in January 2006.

Presentation on joint work between DCMI and IEEE/LOM

, In the context of the joint work item between DCMI and IEEE/LOM to develop a recommended representation of the metadata elements of the IEEE Learning Object Metadata Standard in the Dublin Core Abstract Model, Mikael Nilsson made a presentation to the IEEE/LOM meeting in Orlando in October 2005 outlining the approach and the current status.

DCMI Usage Board meets in Madrid

, The DCMI Usage Board met in Madrid on 9-10 September 2005. A large batch of editorial changes to existing elements and Type Vocabulary terms — clarifications of wording, updated references, and the like — will be posted on 7 November 2005 for a public comment period prior to final approval. The comment period will also cover revisions to existing recommendations related to “Dublin Core Structured Values”.

DC-2005 in Madrid well attended

, this year's conference and workshop, DC-2005, that was held from 12 through 15 September 2005 in Leganés (Madrid) was attended by 214 attendes from 33 countries. Participants were enthusiastic about the facilities provided by the University of Carlos III and the programme, including four keynotes, five tutorials, fourteen long papers, eighteen short papers, fourteen Working Group meetings and ten special sessions. More information is available on the conference Web site, and the papers are expected to be available soon in the Dublin Core Conference Paper Repository.

DC-2005 Preliminary Program online

DC-2004 in Shanghai successful

, DC-2004, this year's International Conference on Dublin Core and Metadata Applications, that took place in Shanghai, China from 11 to 14 October was a great success. There were 160 participants from 21 countries, representing a wide range of domains: corporate, governments, libraries, archives, universities, education, computer science and international organisations. Summary of DC Usage Board Meeting in Shanghai

, The Usage Board has published a summary of the main decisions taken at its meeting at DC-2004 in Shanghai on 9-10 October 2004. These decisions include the approval of five new terms related to education, accessibility, and collection description; the endorsement of MARC Relator terms as sub-properties of Contributor; and clarification of a method for endorsing non-DCMI-maintained identifiers for use as vocabulary encoding schemes. Note that Usage Board decisions are not considered official until decision documents are finalized and published on the DCMI Web site.

Two pre-conferences on 10 October 2004 at DC-2004

, Two pre-conferences will take place on 10 October 2004 in Shanghai, China, in conjunction with DC-2004. The first pre-conference "Metadata for Interoperability in the Global Corporate Environment" is organized by the DCMI Global Corporate Circle in co-operation with the CEN/ISSS Worshop on Dublin Core metadata. The second pre-conference "Supporting the Reuse of Digital Educational Resources" is organized by the DCMI Education Working Group in co-operation with the U.S. National Science Digital Library initiative. Registration for these two pre-conferences is nowthrough the conference's online registration facility.

Highlights of the DCMI Usage Board meeting, 27-28 September 2003 in Seatlle

, The DCMI Usage Board held its sixth bi-annual meeting on 27-28 September in Seattle. Topics discussed included the finalization of a decision to add "Moving Image" and "Still Image" to the DCMI Type Vocabulary; user-oriented guidance such as "Using Dublin Core", "Guidelines for Dublin Core Application Profiles", and the "AskDCMI" service; the registration and identification of encoding schemes; the use of MARC Relator terms as refinements of dc:contributor; and a draft Abstract Model under discussion on the DC-Architecture list. Related drafts and decision texts will be made available on the Usage Board Web pages.

High turnout for DC-2003

, DC-2003, the annual Dublin Core event that took place in Seattle from 28 through 2 October 2003, attracted over 300 participants from 20 countries. Abstracts and full text of the papers and posters are available on the Program section of the conference Web site.. Reports of working group meetings will be prepared and are expected to become available on the working group Web pages by early November.

Usage Board meeting in Seattle; comment period for DCMICite

, The DCMI Usage Board will hold its next meeting on Saturday and Sunday, 27-28 September 2003, in conjunction with the DC-2003 conference in Seattle, Washington. Please contact Thomas Baker for further details.

The DCMI Citation Working Group has submitted a proposal -- "DCMICite: a Bibliographic Citation Dublin Core Structured Value (DCSV) Encoding Scheme" -- for review by the Usage Board (see the Public Comment page). Public comment isuntil 26 September; comments should be sent to DC-General.

DCMI Board of Trustees and Advisory Board meetings in Seattle

, In conjunction with DC-2003, meetings will be held in Seattle of the DCMI Board of Trustees (27 September 2003) and the DCMI Advisory Board (3 October 2003).

IFLA Satellite meeting to be held at the Göttingen State and University Library

, The Göttingen State and University Library (SUB), the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI), and the Information Technology Section of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) are jointly organizing an IFLA Satellite meeting to be held at the Göttingen State and University Library, Germany from 11th August to the 12th of August 2003.

This meeting, entitled "Information Technology and DCMI" will share new developments in Dublin Core metadata and encourage use theArchives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting to exchange and share metadata collections (repositories).

Further objectives include discussions about important related issues such as long-term preservation and metadata registries, and will include discussion of DCMI's National Affiliate program.

The program includes an international range of talks exploring common approaches and challenges to the topic of DCMI, metadata issues, long-term preservation, OAI and metadata registries. The outcomes of this meeting are expected to inform followup discussions at DC-2003 in Seattle Washington in September.

DCMI Usage Board met at Cornell in June

, The DCMI Usage Board held a meeting at Cornell University on 16-17 June 2003 and is currently finalizing a series of decisions and documents, among which:

  • a clarification by Andy Powell of issues related to "structured values" (to be moved through DCMI process as an addition to its guiding principles);
  • progress on a formal declaration from Library of Congress that MARC Relator terms refine dc:contributor (and can therefore be used as Element Refinements);
  • approval of "still image" and "moving image" as sub-types of "image" in the DCMI Type Vocabulary;
  • approval of two new encoding schemes needed for the DCMI Libraries application profile.

The full decisions and related materials will be made available as they are finalized.

DCMI Board of Trustees met in Budapest in May

, The DCMI Board of Trustees mid-year meeting convened in Budapest, Hungary at the end of May to discuss ongoing activities and review organizational plans and activities for the coming months.

Agenda items included the DCMI Directorate leadership transition, status of current working group activities, strategic opportunities, discussion of funding opportunities and financial status of DCMI, and progress on organization of the upcoming DC Conference in Seattle.

The development and prospects of the Affiliate program occupied a significant part of the meeting, coming soon after the establishment of the National Library of Finland as DCMI's first National Affiliate. Discussions continue with additional prospects in this important effort to distribute ownership and support of DCMI more widely. Discussions included the evolving form of governance of DCMI and how this might be distributed more broadly to reflect the interests of stakeholders.

Other agenda issues included strategic liaisons that will be increasingly important as the metadata landscape evolves and the role that DCMI can play in helping consolidate a stable metadata architecture on the Web.

The DCMI Board of Trustees meets twice a year in face-to-face meetings and communicates through teleconferences and email as issues arise. The next meeting will be held in conjunction with DC-2003 in Seattle.

, The National Library of Spain hosts a Seminar on the "Application of the Dublin Core Metadata Model in Spain" on 5 June 2003 in Madrid. The meeting is co-organized by the University Institute of Information Science and Information Management "Agustín Millares" of the Carlos III University in Madrid; SEDIC, the Spanish Society of Information Science and Scientific Information; and the National Library of Spain.
